Unique books for gifts, for you, for family, friends, and those interested in Tucson
My name is Tani Sanchez and I come from a family of African American storytellers. As a child, I remember my grandmother telling me about her Civil War grandfather, Charles Wright, and her grandmother, an emancipated former house slave. She knew all of them personally! I listened spellbound to stories of aunts and uncles and times long past. My mother, along with my sister Derri, carried on the oral tradition, collecting stories and images of Tucson, Arizona in the years before segregation, later printing their book, Unsung Memories. I continued the practice, earning a doctorate from my university but this time collecting family stories and publishing them. Didn't Come From Nothing.
What you see here is a special kind of site, one that offers written accounts of Tucson's African American communit from generations ago and my own personal family Black migration story and genealogy with connection spanning the nation. My most recent publication is Meals and Memoirs II, a collection of interviews and stories about residents up to the present, along with a look at how we transitioned during the Covid-19 pandemic. The handful of books here are a unique and very special look at a community that has always been alive, vibrant and evolving even though our numbers are very small. I invite you to discover something precious in these works. More is to come.
This site has information about the books, but they are currently available only through Amazon.com and through BarnesandNoble.com. See the Home Page for details.
